Sunday Sermon Series: "Why Did Jesus Have to Die?"
February 18-April 5, 2026
The cross stands at the heart of our faith-and it also raises some of the biggest questions we carry: Why did Jesus have to die? Did God need that suffering? How does something that happened so long ago change anything for us today?
If you've ever thought, "I believe in the crucifixion... I just don't fully understand it," you're not alone.
This Lent, we'll explore these questions together-not to arrive at easy answers, but to go deeper into the mystery and meaning of what happened on that cross.
(Inspired by Adam Hamilton's book of the same title)
Message from CORE Chair - Leadership Retreat Summary
This week our leadership team gathered for a focused retreat centered on alignment, clarity, and shared direction. Together, we reflected on congregational
feedback, shared insights from each area of leadership, and grounded our work in prayer and discernment.
The team worked through setting clear one-year goals for each leadership area, identifying 1–3 priorities for the next 90 days, and defining simple Ministry Pulse metrics to help us notice growth, engagement, and areas needing care. We also aligned on a shared meeting rhythm to support consistent, prayerful, and effective leadership moving forward.
The retreat concluded with a strong sense of unity, clarity around next steps, and gratitude for the work God is doing in and through our church. Leaders are leaving with shared focus and practical tools to guide the season ahead.

THRIVE’S Bible story is Love Is... from I Corinthians 13. God loves you so you can love everyone, too. This is what our elementary kids will be learning 7 January – 11 February!
Ask each other what you remember about: • Paul • Corinth • Love • God’s love • Faith, hope, love
Although this passage is often used at weddings, the original context was addressing multiple relationships in a community. The church at Corinth was having a terrible time getting along. They argued that some people were more important and had more gifts from God than others in their community. These verses helped to address this argument. It is still an important passage today!

Every Wednesday - 9:30 am - No Bible Study until January.
A Bible study that was agreed upon for our first study in 2026 is: “Thrive: Living Faithfully in Difficult Times.”
This study based on the book of James is a six week study by Jennifer Cowart to help women develop the habits and attitudes to thrive whatever the circumstances. The book of James is a letter written about enduring hardships using six traits: Endurance, Wisdom, Action, Control, Humility, and Prayer. It is designed differently with daily lessons for about 5 days a week with questions in the workbook for you to answer. The days we gather will be much the same with a 8-13 min DVD and discussion questions from a leader book.
The participants workbook if we order from Cokesbury is listed for $12.99 each. The workbook can be purchased on Amazon for $13.49. There is also a kindle version listed on Amazon.
*The date we begin will depend on when we can get books… Please RSVP if you wish to attend and how you plan to get your book.

*Reminder - please remember to bring your 2026 Estimate of Giving Card to Church Sunday or any day this week. Thank you!
Your Commitment Makes Ministry Possible
As we prepare for 2026, we’re asking everyone to prayerfully complete and return your Estimate of Giving card. These commitments aren’t just paperwork—they’re the foundation that allows us to live out our mission of “Living Jesus’s radical love, welcoming all into life-changing faith and joyful service.”
When you share your intended giving for the coming year, you help us:
Plan worship and ministry programs with confidence
Support our staff and maintain our facilities
Reach out to our community with compassion and purpose
Make faithful decisions about where God is calling us to grow
Your generosity—whatever the amount—matters deeply. Every gift fuels our shared ministry and makes our vision possible. Please bring your completed card to worship this Sunday or drop it by the church office.

~ Hooray! Also in September, some of the Reconciling Ministry team were present with a booth at the Pride festival in Burnsville
~ Hooray! In October Glendale once again participated in the city of Savage Boo-Bash with a booth filled with a spinning wheel and activities for all the children. Like last year, Glendale's booth was a favorite! ~ Hooray! 7 Coming up, Glendale is hosting their annual Thanksgiving Day community meal which has become a tradition for many families!
~ Hooray! On December 6th another annual event, the United Women of Faith's Cookie Sale will be happening. A new addition this year is the Sunday Funday Youth are having a Christmas Market to coincide with the Cookie sale!
~ Hooray! Also, Glendale is going to be a host site for the Bishop's Zoom Advent study on Monday nights in December.
~ Hooray! AND... if all of this isn't enough to toot our horns, Glendale has welcomed ANOTHER 10 new members this fall with another new member group possibly in December!
~ Hooray! God is definitely up to something at Glendale UMC!

Purchase and pack one of each Core Five food items into a paper grocery bag. (Bring these items bagged up.)
*Please do not include notes inside bags when packing.
Core Five

Women's Bible Study
Every Wednesday - 9:30 am
This week (11/12/25) we will finish our Adam Hamilton study of the Ten Commandments with chapter 10 “Keeping Up With The Joneses”. I hope those of you who are able will be there.
Our next study will be “A Child Is Born” by Amy Jill Levine. We will prepare for Advent by studying ancient birth stories in the Bible and reveal how they foreshadow and enrich the timeless Christmas story. Amy Jill is a professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies. As a Jew, she is able to highlight Jesus’s roots in Judaism and thereby understand his teachings more accurately and in depth. It is in the similar format as our previous study. This study was chosen by the UMC Bishop Lanette for an Advent study so there is also an opportunity to join discussions by Zoom on Monday nights Dec 1-22.
Our four dates for this study at our usual 9:30 start are:
November 19
December 3
December 10
December 17

***Message from The Open Door Pantry***
The ongoing government shutdown is creating an urgent situation for our community. Here in Dakota County, 10,000 of our neighbors will not receive their SNAP benefits in November if the shutdown continues, and over 1,000 federal workers are without pay.
What We Need Your Help With…
Here are three ways you can make a difference right now.
Volunteer on Saturdays: We urgently need volunteers for our new Saturday distributions on November 1st, 8th, 15th, & 22nd. This a great opportunity for groups and supporters who can't always find time to volunteer during the regular workday. Tasks will be simple, and training will be provided on site.
Several Glendale folks are volunteering - there are still spots available on some Saturdays. Click on the link if you wish to volunteer.
Host a To-Go Bag Packing Party: Assemble and drop off emergency To-Go Bags. This is a critical, hands-on way to help and save our team valuable time. We have seen a 3-fold increase in requests for these bags in The Pantry, and from our partners who use them to help in places across our community.
Look for details soon on how Glendale can form a Pack Party and collect food items.
Donate Funds: If you don’t have time for either of the above, then a financial gift is the most flexible and immediate way to help us. Funds allow us to act fast and pay for what is most needed during this time.
Attend the Community Thanksgiving Potluck at Glendale on November 27th from 12:00-2:00 pm
Come as you are. If you are able, bring a dish to share or a friend to gather with. All are welcome. We can’t wait to see you there!

Trustee News
The Trustees have been very busy over the last month. In addition to all the tasks all our helping hands offered and accomplished on Fall Clean up, the Trustee have done the following tasks:
Adjusted the parking lot light timer, fixed the latch on the little library and painted the library, fixed the loose plastic on the community bulletin board, painted the garden sign, did the mold test in the basement (which came back good), recycled the water damaged music boxes from choir room, recycled a bunch of e-waste that we no longer need, yard has been aerated, new soundboard installed in the sanctuary, and the piano light has been repaired.
We think we have solved the groundwater issue that has been affecting the choir room in the basement. We are ready to move onto replacing the damaged carpet in that room in conjunction with replacing the carpet in the multi-purpose room downstairs. That room has been a priority for the youth team. We are working with them to achieve their goal of making a more attractive space for our teens and young adults. Look for improvements coming soon.
Over the next two weeks, we ask that you bear with us as we upgrade our technical capabilities in the sanctuary. The webcast capabilities will be spotty over the next two weeks while we get fully integrated with the new tech. In addition to the new soundboard, there is a new TV above the sound booth that folks on the stage can see; the old projectors will be taken down and new audience microphones will be installed so our folks watching online can hear the audience sound; new connection box will go in the front and we will be able to have more instruments and more singers mic'd up; the music folks will have the ability to wear ear buds so they can all hear each other better
Thank you namely to John K, Dale R, and Paul M for their tireless work and to Brad L for spearheading our tech improvements.

Hennepin Avenue UMC, Peace UMC and MN Reconciling Congregations invite you to hear author, Pastor Colby Martin, present "Not An Oxymoron: Why LGBTQ Affirming Christianity Makes Sense" on October 20 at 7 p.m. at Hennepin Ave UMC. This talk is based on Colby Martin's book UnClobber, which tackles the Bible verses most commonly used to exclude the LGBTQ+ community.
For many Christians, especially those raised in more conservative environments, these verses and these theological perspectives have been used to hold people back from being inclusive and supportive of their friends and loved ones. For those who identify as LGBTQ+, these verses and theological perspectives have been the reason why they may have left their faith or struggled to re-engage the Bible. A talk like this, that responsibly handles these passages, can be a pivotal moment.
