Church Happenings - Week of 10/28/25
***Message from The Open Door Pantry***
The ongoing government shutdown is creating an urgent situation for our community. Here in Dakota County, 10,000 of our neighbors will not receive their SNAP benefits in November if the shutdown continues, and over 1,000 federal workers are without pay.
What We Need Your Help With…
Here are three ways you can make a difference right now.
Volunteer on Saturdays: We urgently need volunteers for our new Saturday distributions on November 1st, 8th, 15th, & 22nd. This a great opportunity for groups and supporters who can't always find time to volunteer during the regular workday. Tasks will be simple, and training will be provided on site.
Several Glendale folks are volunteering - there are still spots available on some Saturdays. Click on the link if you wish to volunteer.
Host a To-Go Bag Packing Party: Assemble and drop off emergency To-Go Bags. This is a critical, hands-on way to help and save our team valuable time. We have seen a 3-fold increase in requests for these bags in The Pantry, and from our partners who use them to help in places across our community.
Look for details soon on how Glendale can form a Pack Party and collect food items.
Donate Funds: If you don’t have time for either of the above, then a financial gift is the most flexible and immediate way to help us. Funds allow us to act fast and pay for what is most needed during this time.
Sunday Morning Prayer Team
Join us every Sunday from 9:15-9:30 AM downstairs in classroom 1 for prayer before worship. Together, we'll pray for our world, our nation, our community, and each other. In times like these, prayer matters—and praying together matters even more.

Trustee News
The Trustees have been very busy over the last month. In addition to all the tasks all our helping hands offered and accomplished on Fall Clean up, the Trustee have done the following tasks:
Adjusted the parking lot light timer, fixed the latch on the little library and painted the library, fixed the loose plastic on the community bulletin board, painted the garden sign, did the mold test in the basement (which came back good), recycled the water damaged music boxes from choir room, recycled a bunch of e-waste that we no longer need, yard has been aerated, new soundboard installed in the sanctuary, and the piano light has been repaired.
We think we have solved the groundwater issue that has been affecting the choir room in the basement. We are ready to move onto replacing the damaged carpet in that room in conjunction with replacing the carpet in the multi-purpose room downstairs. That room has been a priority for the youth team. We are working with them to achieve their goal of making a more attractive space for our teens and young adults. Look for improvements coming soon.
Over the next two weeks, we ask that you bear with us as we upgrade our technical capabilities in the sanctuary. The webcast capabilities will be spotty over the next two weeks while we get fully integrated with the new tech. In addition to the new soundboard, there is a new TV above the sound booth that folks on the stage can see; the old projectors will be taken down and new audience microphones will be installed so our folks watching online can hear the audience sound; new connection box will go in the front and we will be able to have more instruments and more singers mic'd up; the music folks will have the ability to wear ear buds so they can all hear each other better
Thank you namely to John K, Dale R, and Paul M for their tireless work and to Brad L for spearheading our tech improvements.

Hennepin Avenue UMC, Peace UMC and MN Reconciling Congregations invite you to hear author, Pastor Colby Martin, present "Not An Oxymoron: Why LGBTQ Affirming Christianity Makes Sense" on October 20 at 7 p.m. at Hennepin Ave UMC. This talk is based on Colby Martin's book UnClobber, which tackles the Bible verses most commonly used to exclude the LGBTQ+ community.
For many Christians, especially those raised in more conservative environments, these verses and these theological perspectives have been used to hold people back from being inclusive and supportive of their friends and loved ones. For those who identify as LGBTQ+, these verses and theological perspectives have been the reason why they may have left their faith or struggled to re-engage the Bible. A talk like this, that responsibly handles these passages, can be a pivotal moment.

Church Happenings - Week of 9/16/25
Saturday, September 20 - 8:00 AM - Noon Glendale Fall "Clean Up" Day
Think less 'work crew' and more 'family reunion with tools!' Here's the church's best-kept secret: Clean-up Day is actually Fun Day. It's our favorite morning to laugh, share stories, and oh yeah—get stuff done together.
Whether you can spare an hour or the whole morning, come discover why so many members mark this as a can't-miss event. Coffee and donuts provided, new friendships guaranteed, and yes—we'll accomplish some projects along the way:
Here are some tasks we aim to complete:
Deep clean the kitchen
Disinfect children's toys in the nursery
Trim trees and bushes, removing any dead branch or branch under 6 feet (Please bring a pole saw if you can volunteer one)
Patch potholes in the parking lot (Weather dependent - needs to be dry and the week calls for rain)
Repaint the garden sign (Paint and brushes will be provided)
Repair the latch on the Little Library
Replace outdoor light bulbs
Replace smoke and CO detectors as needed
Replace worn doorstops
Clean windows (inside and outside)
We will also be setting up activities for the Sunday, including the after-service obstacle course. Thank you, and we hope to see everyone there!

Sunday, September 21, Week 3 of our month-long celebration
Help us celebrate by recognizing and honoring Glendale's Charter Members—the visionary founding families who planted the seeds of our beloved community four decades ago.
Pastor Brenda will lead us in worship as we celebrate these cornerstones of our church family. Together, we'll reflect on our history as a faith community—considering the storms and winters we've weathered together—the winding paths and obstacles we've navigated. We will draw from God's strength and tenderness for the challenging seasons we face now, both personally and as a community. In remembering how far we've come, we find hope for where we're going.
After worship, join us for:
Fellowship treats for every taste—from classic comfort favorites like hot chocolate and donuts to fresh fruit and other options
A special guided labyrinth walk—experience this ancient practice of meditation and prayer with gentle guidance through each turn
NEW! The inaugural Glendale Obstacle Course—designed specifically for adults! Come be part of this hilarious first-time adventure (trust us, you'll want bragging rights on accomplishing this one!)
Most importantly—time to connect, share stories, and strengthen the bonds that have sustained us for four decades
Come discover why Glendale has thrived for 40 years: it's always been about the people.

Did you miss the community conversation two weeks ago?
The Core team shared the mission statement and core values the team has developed over the past year through congregational input, leadership meetings, prayer, and conversation. Continue reading below or follow this link for more details: Mission & Core Values.
Mission Statement:
Living Jesus’s radical love, welcoming all into life-changing faith and joyful service.
Values:
Here are the condensed versions of Glendale Church’s values:
Open-Hearted Welcome
Following Jesus’ example, we embrace all people exactly as they are- regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, economic status, ability or background. There’s a place for you at Glendale Church.
Authentic Exploration
We believe meaningful growth happens when we are honest about life’s challenges and questions. Your questions and doubts aren’t just tolerated; they’re respected as part of a healthy journey with Jesus.
Good Neighbors
Jesus taught us to love our neighbors as ourselves, a command we take seriously through our food distribution, school partnerships, and community garden. The church doesn’t just serve the neighborhood; the neighborhood helps shape and energize the church, too.
Adaptive Spirit
Like the early church, we believe in being responsive to our changing world with creativity and willingness to try new things. We honor meaningful traditions while remaining flexible enough to meet today’s needs in fresh ways.
Joy-Filled Connection
Life is serious enough! We believe church should add more laughter and light to your week. At Glendale, laughter and friendship aren’t just nice extras; they’re spiritual practices that reflect God’s joy in our midst.
Candlelight Vigil Tonight at 5:30
Our hearts are heavy. In response to today's tragedy, Glendale UMC opens our doors to our community for healing and hope.
Join us TONIGHT, Wednesday, August 27th, 5:30-6:30pm for:
Candlelight Vigil (5:30pm) - A time for quiet reflection and remembrance
Community Prayer Service (6:00pm) - Brief service of comfort and hope
Come and go as you feel called. Arrive at 6pm for just the service, or stay for just the candlelight time- whatever brings you comfort.
All faiths and backgrounds welcome. Come as you are. We grieve together, we heal together, we hope together.

You’re invited to a special Community Conversation & Celebration on Sunday, August 17th at 11:15am!
Please stay after worship service to join us in the fellowship hall for an exciting moment in our church’s journey. Our core team will be sharing our newly crafted mission statement and values - the foundational work that will guide our path forward and help us communicate who we are as a community.
This is also a joyful celebration of our identity! We’ll be taking a community photo together in front of the pride flag to commemorate our decision from earlier this summer and for our Reconciling Ministries page. This photo will be an important part of sharing our welcoming spirit with the broader community. You may want to wear your favorite pride clothes!
Your presence matters as we come together to celebrate this pivotal moment and set our goals for the future. This foundational work is essential to who we are becoming, and we want every voice to be part of it!
Come ready to celebrate, connect, and be part of something meaningful.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, you are invited to help us celebrate the 40th anniversary of Glendale United Methodist Church with your time, talents and treasures!
We hope you will spend some time each Sunday in September with us. We start the month with Bishop Lanette delivering a sermon on SEEDS OF FAITH as well
as helping with the blessing of students and teachers. Pastor Brenda will share message of ROOTS & GROWTH as well as WEATHERING SEASONS.
We conclude the month with Conference Superintendent WooJae’s words about the church being a HARVEST OF BLESSINGS.
Each Sunday you will have an opportunity to embrace your talents through a whole host of activities. You will also be blessed, in person or through video, by our past pastors.
Throughout the month of September, we are accepting donations from your treasures in ANY amount but believe $40, $400 or $4000 would be a fantastic way to bless
Glendale’s ongoing ministries. Checks can be made out to Glendale United Methodist Church indicating 40th Anniversary in memo line.

Sunday Worship Volunteers are needed every Sunday.
Explore the volunteer opportunities below and find the role that suits you best.
GREETER
Since Glendale focuses on loving God and others, we aim to have a welcoming presence as people arrive for service. Ensure they check their name on the "Our Welcome Sheet,"show them the bathrooms, point out the sign with the Wi-Fi password, and hold an umbrella for those arriving in the rain. A wheelchair is available in the hallway by the bathrooms for anyone needing assistance.
USHER
Sign up to assist with worship logistics here. Ensure attendees have their bulletins and hymnals if desired. Offer our kids' bags and invite guests to leave their contact
information for a fuller welcome later in the week. During the service, bring prayer requests to the pastor and place the offering on the altar as the church prays over the gifts. Finally, record the head count in the binder by the bulletins.
ACOLYTE
Light the candles on the altar before the service and extinguish them at the end.
TECH TEAM
Are you a PowerPoint enthusiast ready to help others follow along in worship? Or would you like to operate the live-stream and camera (there's a joystick involved)? Sign up here. If you're interested but need training, email us at glendalechurch@msn.com, and we'll connect you with an experienced team member.
LITURGIST
Are you passionate about bringing scripture to life? Sign up to read during worship! We'll send you the passage the Thursday or Friday before your Sunday, so you have time to practice those tricky names with confidence. Feel free to read in another language if you'd like!
Please review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up. Thank you!
